How should I think about which type of role to target — IC vs. management, or current industry vs. new industry?

Start with what you actually want long-term, then plan backwards. If you want to move into management, look for companies where you can enter at director or above — not where you'd have to earn management from an IC role. If you want to shift industries, identify which of your skills are transferable and industry-neutral, and position those prominently. If compensation is the primary driver, focus your outreach and connections on the companies that pay at the level you need, because passive applications alone won't get you there.
